Monastery Cloister and Church, Bad Wimpfen, Germany

Along the Neckar River in southern Germany, in the small town of Bad Wimpfen, is a church of ancient foundation and its associated and beautiful monastic cloister. Parts of the church building date to the 10th century, while much of the church and cloister was built in the 13th through 15th centuries. This architectural gem was a pleasure to photograph and explore.

Bad Wimpfen is a lovely, small town in the southern German state of Baden-Württemburg, but it is blessed by a well preserved historic architecture with a good many survivals, and overall character, from the medieval period. From a 19th century, romantic train station to many half-timber buildings and remains from a former imperial palace, there is much to explore in this beautiful town.

Minneapolis Mill District

For more than 50 years, Minneapolis was the world center of the flour milling industry with some of the largest producing mills the world has ever seen. Fueled by St. Anthony Falls, the only water fall on the Mississippi, the area was once a loud and dusty place. Flour milling has long since moved elsewhere, especially with the advent of electrically driven mills, but the mill district continues to live on with other purposes, including condos, restaurants, the Guthrie Theater, and the Minnesota Historical Society's Mill City Museum.

Christmas Snow

Southwestern Minnesota had a little snow on Christmas. Actually it was 21 inches of snow over several days during the 2009 Christmas holiday, leaving everything covered in a beautiful white blanket.

Petroglyphs and Prairie

The Jeffers Petroglyphs in southwestern Minnesota is a site where thousands of symbols, glyphs, and figures were carved into the very hard, glacier marked Sioux quartzite that comes to the surface here. The glyphs at this sacred Native site could date as early as 7000–9000 years ago up to a couple centuries ago. Surrounding the exposed rock face is a prairie remnant, giving but a small sense of what the landscape in the area was once like before European settlement. The site is owned and operated by the Minnesota Historical Society. The prairie landscape and flower photographs start at photo 16.
